About Elkins Park, Pennsylvania

Elkins Park is a community of 6,901 people in Montgomery County, split between Cheltenham and Abington Townships on the northern edge of Philadelphia. Its oldest house dates from 1682, when Richard Wall built the first section on land granted by William Penn. From 1683 to 1702, Quakers used Wall's house as one of their early meeting places.

Early in the 20th century, Philadelphia's business leaders picked this area for their country homes. Peter A.B. Widener, Jay Cooke, John B. Stetson, William Lukens Elkins and John Wanamaker all lived here. Many of their Gilded Age mansions still stand, among them Lynnewood Hall, a neoclassical estate with 110 rooms.

  • Frank Lloyd Wright's only synagogueFrank Lloyd Wright worked with Rabbi Mortimer J. Cohen on Beth Sholom Synagogue, on Old York Road, and the building was finished in 1959. Wright never designed another synagogue. Its shape recalls Mount Sinai from the Bible, built in concrete, steel, aluminum and glass, and it is now a National Historic Landmark.
  • A house lived in since 1682Richard Wall's house had the longest unbroken run of residents of any house in Pennsylvania, until rehabilitation work began on it. The Wall House is listed on the state and National Registers, and it now serves as the Richard Wall House Museum.
  • An ice cream maker's homeThe ice cream magnate Henry W. Breyer Sr. once lived in a mansion here. Cheltenham Township now runs its government from that house, which is on the National Register as the Henry W. Breyer Sr. House.
  • The Elkins family's summer homeWilliam L. Elkins, a Pennsylvania Railroad magnate, used the Elkins Estate as his family's summer place. The estate is now being restored to hold a hotel and spa, a distillery and an events center.
  • A park where a school burnedCheltenham High School once stood on this ground. After the school building burned, the township turned the land into High School Park in 1996. Its 11 acres hold four different ecosystems.
