About Folsom, Pennsylvania
Folsom is a community of 8,287 people in Ridley Township, Delaware County, about 11 miles southwest of Center City Philadelphia. It began as a new town on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and in 1887 a Philadelphia builders' journal described it as a place still being settled.
The Folsom Land Company had plotted three thousand building lots here, and it sold five hundred of them in its first year. By 1887 buyers had taken about fourteen hundred, and Professor Genth Jr. of the University of Pennsylvania was planning a cottage of his own in the young town.
- The biggest depot on the lineFolsom sat eight and a half miles from Philadelphia by rail. To serve it, the Baltimore and Ohio built a handsome new depot here, and in 1887 no other station on the railroad's route between Philadelphia and Chester was larger.
- The first Wawa, 1964Wawa opened its very first convenience store in Folsom on April 16, 1964, at the corner of MacDade Boulevard and Swarthmore Avenue. That store closed on June 27, 2016, when a bigger super Wawa opened a short way down the street, and the town held a parade from the original store to the new one.
- Home of Ridley High SchoolTwo of the Ridley School District's nine schools stand in Folsom. Ridley High School is at 901 Morton Avenue, one of the town's busier roads, and Edgewood Elementary School is at 525 8th Avenue, among the houses.
