About Forest, Cheboygan County, Michigan

In 1899 a new lumber settlement in Forest Township took the name of Ellen May Tower. She was the daughter of Judge Samuel S. Tower, a Civil War veteran who lived there. Ellen served as a nurse in the Spanish-American War and died in Puerto Rico in December 1898. She was the first American servicewoman to die in wartime overseas.

Tower became a village in 1906. By 1910 about 800 residents and lumber workers lived there, and the town had five sawmills. The timber soon ran short, and the mill companies left for new forests. The village gave up its charter around 1920.

  • What the town came throughWhen wildfires swept the region in July 1911, nearly everyone in Tower fled east to Onaway. A group of men stayed and worked without rest to save buildings, lumber and rail equipment. The depot and many mills burned, but the town survived.
