About Nunda, Michigan
Nunda is a township of 1,195 people in Cheboygan County, in northern Michigan. Its main village began as Torrey, laid out on land that belonged to Daniel McKillop. John M. Sanborne, a surveyor from Otsego County, drew up the plat, and the new village covered seven blocks.
Nunda and Wilmot townships were created later, and the village, which sits in both of them, was renamed Wolverine. Wolverine was incorporated as a village in April 1903, twenty-eight miles south of the city of Cheboygan.
- Where the apple was kingThe History of Northern Michigan reported that Cheboygan County farmers paid little attention to fruit until about a dozen years before it was written. By then, the book said, the apple was king in Nunda Township, along with Wilmot, Benton and Munro townships and the villages of Indian River, Wolverine and Black River.
- One village, two townshipsBecause Wolverine straddles the township line, the census split it in two. One count in the History of Northern Michigan found 765 people in Nunda Township's share of Wolverine, while the whole village, counting its part in Wilmot Township, held 794.
