About Fort Bridger, Wyoming
Jim Bridger and Louis Vasquez founded the trading post that gave this town its name. Travelers on the Oregon Trail stopped there, as did Mormon pioneers and Pony Express riders. Most visitors complained of short supplies and high prices. By 1858 the post had become an army outpost.
Mormon settlers told Brigham Young that the fort was selling liquor and ammunition to local tribes. That broke federal law. In 1853 Young sent a militia of forty-eight men from Salt Lake City. Jim Bridger was warned and escaped just before they arrived. The men destroyed tons of liquor but found no ammunition.
