About Fort Morgan, Colorado

Fort Morgan is a city of 11,597 people and the county seat of Morgan County, on the Colorado plains. In 1865 the Army set up Camp Wardwell beside the Overland Trail to guard travelers and freight headed to Denver and the mining districts. The next year General John Pope renamed the post for Colonel Christopher A. Morgan, a member of his staff who had died earlier in 1866.

The fort shut down in 1868, and its buildings fell to ruins. On May 1, 1884, Abner S. Baker platted a new town just south of the old post and kept its name. Baker, a Wisconsin native, had first moved to Greeley's Union Colony in the 1870s. When Morgan County was formed, his town became its county seat on February 19, 1889.

  • About 1,300 soldiersUntil it closed in 1868, the post was manned in turn by 19 different companies, taken from 11 regiments of cavalry and infantry. Together they made up about 1,300 soldiers, who guarded the traffic moving along the trail between Denver and the East.
