About Brush, Colorado

Brush is a city of 5,339 people in Morgan County, on the plains of northeastern Colorado, 93 miles northeast of Denver by Interstate 76. The community got its post office on September 19, 1882, and a little over two years later, on November 24, 1884, Brush was incorporated as a town.

Farming and ranching have carried the local economy from the start, and they still do. Each July the town holds the Brush Rodeo, and the Morgan County Fair shows off the 4-H projects and livestock raised by local families.

“The sanatorium, known as Eben Ezer, was built near Brush for the purpose of carrying out mercy work in caring for consumptives.”
National Register of Historic Places
  • Named for Jared L. BrushThe town honors Jared L. Brush, a Colorado cattle pioneer who helped settle the Greeley area and later became Lieutenant Governor. He never made his home here, but he came back often to see what he called "his town." Another story says that in 1883 the mayor promised his council a name within two weeks, then picked one while grooming his horse with a brush.
  • Home of the BeetdiggersBrush High School teams play as the Beetdiggers, a nod to the sugar beet harvest that mattered so much to the area's farms. The football team has won several state championships, playing its home games at Beetdigger Stadium.
  • A Kentucky Derby winnerPat Day was born in Brush. He rode to victory in the 1992 Kentucky Derby and was later elected to the jockey Hall of Fame.
  • A schoolhouse museumThe city museum fills a former schoolhouse, and the East Morgan County Library also serves readers from Brush.
