About Fredericktown, Ohio
Fredericktown is a village of 2,648 people in Knox County, about seven miles northwest of Mount Vernon. John Kerr laid out the town in 1807, and the streets he planned grew into a village of homes, shops and churches. More than 20 of those old buildings are now on the National Register, among them the Tuttle House on East College Street and the Main Street home of the Fredericktown Presbyterian Church.
- Named for Frederick, MarylandOne of Fredericktown's first settlers had come from Frederick, Maryland, and the town platted in 1807 took the name of that hometown. Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio credits John Kerr with laying it out.
- Home of the FFA jacketIn 1933 Dr. J.H. "Gus" Lintner, a Fredericktown teacher and advisor to the local Future Farmers of America chapter, had a blue corduroy jacket made for his students. The students took it to Kansas City, Missouri, where they had it on at the national convention. National leaders liked it enough to adopt it as part of FFA's Official Dress, and millions of members have put it on since.
