About Freedom, Maine
Revolutionary War soldier Stephen Smith settled here in 1794. The place was first called Smithstown Plantation, then Beaver Hill Plantation. During the War of 1812 it was incorporated on June 11, 1813, under the name Freedom, a name with political meaning.
