About Thorndike, Maine
Thorndike was first called Lincoln Plantation. In 1818 its settlers asked that the new town be named New Gorham. Lawmakers chose another name when they incorporated it on February 15, 1819. They called it Thorndike in honor of the principal proprietor of the land.
Higgin's Mineral Spring in Thorndike was well known in the area, and people believed its water was very healthful. The town sent about 60 men to the Union army during the Civil War.
