About Freeport, New York
In 1853 residents voted to rename their village Freeport. The name came from a colonial nickname among ship captains. Captains could land cargo here without paying customs duties. After the Civil War, Freeport grew into a center for commercial oystering.
Developer John J. Randall opposed laying out all of Freeport in a grid. To spite the grid planners, he built a Victorian house almost overnight on a triangular lot. The Freeport Spite House still stands, and people still live in it.
- An aviation firstIn 1910 brothers Arthur and Albert Heinrich flew the first monoplane built and powered entirely in America. They made it at their own airplane factory in Freeport.
