About Front Royal, Virginia
Front Royal is a town of 15,011 people and the county seat of Warren County. It sits at the spot where the Shenandoah River's North Fork and South Fork join. Chester's Ferry was running nearby by 1736, and the town itself was settled in 1754. It was incorporated in 1788 as Front-Royal. By the 1790s it had a rougher nickname, Helltown, because cattle drovers and river boatmen came through looking for a drink.
The railroad arrived in 1854, when the Alexandria, Orange and Manassas Gap line was built from Manassas to Riverton. It was soon extended to Strasburg, and the line figured in the fighting at Front Royal on May 23, 1862, and all through the Civil War. In the 1930s the American Viscose Corporation opened a rayon plant here that grew to 3,000 workers. It made rayon for tires in World War II and later for rocket nozzles. The plant closed in 1989 after more than 2,000 environmental violations in five years, and its main buildings came down in 1997.
- Bing Crosby's ballparkOn April 30, 1948, Bing Crosby sang on the courthouse steps to raise money for a new stadium, and he gave the first $1,000 to the fund. On April 1, 1950, he led a two-hour parade past 20,000 people to dedicate it. That night his film Riding High had its world premiere at the Park Theater, and his $3,595 check brought the day's take to $15,000.
- Front the Royal Oak!The best-known story says a huge oak, the Royal Tree of England, stood in the colonial square where Chester and Main Streets now meet. The militia drilled under it, and the sergeant's order to "front the Royal Oak" was shortened to Front Royal. A 1905 U.S. Geological Survey bulletin agreed, saying the town was first called Royal Oak. Another story credits a Revolutionary sentry's call of "Front" and the password "Royal."
- A library since 1799Samuels Public Library began in 1799 as the second subscription library in Virginia. It became the Front Royal Library Society in 1836. Bernard Samuels gave it a building in 1952, and the present library opened in 2009.
- Old houses and museumsThe Warren Heritage Society keeps museums in the Balthis House from about 1788, the Belle Boyd Cottage from about 1836 and Ivy Lodge from about 1859. The Balthis House is on the National Register, along with Killahevlin, Lackawanna, Riverside, Rose Hill, Sonner Hall, the Warren County Courthouse and the Front Royal Historic District.
