About Fruitland, New Mexico

Fruitland is a community of 771 people in San Juan County, on the northern bank of the San Juan River. The land was traditional Navajo country, and the Navajo name for the place is Bááh Díílid. Euro-American settlers were permitted to come in 1877, and Latter-day Saints made their first homes here in 1878.

In 1881 the church sent an organized company of settlers, and Luther C. Burnham was a leader among them. He became bishop of the local LDS ward in 1883, and the ward took his name. Because of that, most residents called the place Burnham rather than Fruitland until the 1930s.

  • Named to sell its farmlandThe settlement started out as both a Mormon farming community and a Navajo trading post. The name Fruitland was picked to advertise the area's farming, so that newcomers would know what the land could grow.
  • Church headquarters in 1912The Young Stake was organized in 1912 with its headquarters at Burnham. By 1930 the Burnham Ward counted 718 members, unbaptized children under eight included. By the 1970s the stake was run from Farmington, and in 1982 a new Kirtland Stake was formed. It now reaches from Kirtland west to Shiprock and beyond.
  • Home of Brigham Young Jr.Brigham Young Jr. (1836-1903), a leader of the church, kept one of his homes at Fruitland for a time, while the community was still known as Burnham.
