About Gabbs, Nevada
In about December 1941, Basic Magnesium built Gabbs to house workers at its magnesium plant. Wartime demand for the metal drove the plant to grow fast. The town took its name from Gabbs Valley. That valley honors William Gabb, a paleontologist who studied fossils found in the area.
The first magnesium plant at Gabbs closed in September 1944 after meeting its wartime targets. Many residents left. The town came back in 1955 when Basic Refractories opened a new plant for private buyers. By 1960 about 796 people lived there.
