About Hawthorne, Nevada

Hawthorne is the county seat of Mineral County, a community of 3,118 people at the foot of the Wassuk Range, 7 miles south of Walker Lake. In 1880 H. M. Yerington, head of the newly built Carson and Colorado Railroad, chose this spot as a division point and distribution center for his line. It lay beside Knapp's Station and Ferry Landing, a busy stop on the Esmeralda Toll Road between Wadsworth and Candelaria, and new roads soon tied it to the mining camps around it. The first train pulled in on April 14, 1881, full of people hoping to buy lots in the new town.

Two years later, in 1883, Hawthorne won the Esmeralda County seat away from Aurora, a town in decline. It held the seat until 1907, when booming Goldfield took it. Then the state created Mineral County, and in 1911 Hawthorne became a county seat once more.

“In 1928, Nevada-born and Hawthorne-raised Governor Balzar, turned the first shovel of dirt and dedicated the new depot, which was officially commissioned in 1930.”
Nevada State Historical Marker No. 60
  • First planned as MillbraeThe town was first going to be called Millbrae, but Yerington renamed it for William A. Hawthorne, a pioneer lumberman and rancher he knew from Carson City. In 1878 Hawthorne had staked a mine on Mt. Grant and begun ranching along Cat Creek. In 1880 he ran the railroad company's Bodie toll road as its road superintendent, and he later became Justice of the Peace in the town that carried his name.
  • A Navy depot in 1930After a munitions blast back East in 1926, the Navy picked Hawthorne as the home of a new ammunition depot. The Navy built it here, and today the Hawthorne Army Depot nearly surrounds the town and remains the base of the local economy.
  • Below Mount GrantThe Wassuk Range looks down on Hawthorne from the west. Its tallest summit, Mount Grant, is also the highest point in Mineral County, rising to 11,239 feet about 9 miles northwest of town.
