About Gallipolis, Ohio
Gallipolis is a village of 3,313 people on the Ohio River and the county seat of Gallia County. Its first European settlers were the French 500, people escaping the turmoil of the French Revolution, who had paid agents of the Scioto Company in Paris for land along the river. On October 17, 1790, about 500 of them arrived by flatboat, only to learn that the company had never owned the land and their deeds were worthless.
The settlers stayed anyway, crowding their log cabins together behind a palisade with bastions, on ground that is now City Park. Their town's name means "city of the French," and a post office by that name opened in 1794. A year later President George Washington's administration offered them free land in the French Grant, in what is now Scioto County, if they lived there 5 years and farmed it. Those who chose to remain in Gallipolis had to buy their lots a second time, this time from the Ohio Company.
- The Welsh who stayed in 1818In 1818 six families from Mid-Wales, 36 people, stopped at Gallipolis for supplies while heading downriver to Paddy's Run in Butler County. During their stay someone set their boats adrift; a marker near the river blames either weary women of the party or local people who wanted them to settle. The men found work building the road to Chillicothe, and since the hills reminded them of home, they bought land near Centerville. Their letters home drew more Welsh families.
- Stone towers for the asylumIn 1892 local builders used sandstone from the surrounding hills to raise three water towers along Mill Creek Road for the state's Asylum for Epileptics and Epileptic Insane, which opened on November 30, 1893. The hospital later became the Gallipolis Developmental Center, which still serves 52 patients with developmental disabilities. The Ohio Hospital For Epileptics Stone Water Towers joined the National Register in 1978.
- The Silver Bridge, 1967Built in 1928, the Silver Bridge carried traffic over the Ohio River between Gallipolis and Point Pleasant, West Virginia. On December 15, 1967, it fell under the weight of rush-hour traffic, and 46 people died. Investigators found it had been poorly maintained and was bearing far heavier loads than its designers planned for. The Silver Memorial Bridge took its place in 1969.
- A pioneering scientist as principalEdward Alexander Bouchet, the first Black American awarded a doctorate by a university in the United States, came to Gallipolis to run its Lincoln High School, where he was principal from 1908 to 1913.
