About Thurman, Ohio

Thurman is a village of 87 people in western Gallia County, right on the line with Jackson County. Reuben Rambo and Timothy Jones laid it out on May 6, 1835, with William Preston as their surveyor. The name Centreville came from its spot halfway between Gallipolis and Jackson. Its post office took the name Thurman, after George Thurman, and that's the name the village goes by today.

The village grew out of a Welsh settlement. The first Welsh emigrants landed at Gallipolis in September 1818, bound for Paddy's Run near Cincinnati, but they stayed and found work building the state road from Chillicothe to Gallipolis. Hearing of good land a few miles west, they settled near the spot where Centreville would rise. Timothy Jones was the son of John Jones, one of that first party. More Welsh families followed from about 1834, and Welsh churches and Welsh preaching soon spread across the settlement.

  • A stop on the mail roadBy 1882 Centreville had a school, a Baptist church, a Methodist church, a national bank, several stores, two hotels and a large flour mill. For years it was an important stop on the mail route from Gallipolis to Oak Hill, until the railroad reached Gallipolis.
  • 272 people in 1880The 1880 census counted 272 people in Centreville. John McColester served as the village's first mayor.
  • Thomas EvansThomas Evans was born in 1809 near Llanon in Cardiganshire, Wales, and came to the Welsh settlement at twenty-five. He kept a store in Centreville from 1845 until his death in 1873 and was a leader in the church for more than thirty years.
  • New Zion churchThe Rev. James Gilruth organized the Methodist society on October 12, 1820. It met in Thomas Buck's house until 1832, when the members built a church half a mile west of the village, and it went by the name New Zion until 1868.
