About Jackson, Ohio
Jackson is a city of 6,252 people and the seat of Jackson County, about 27 miles southeast of Chillicothe. Founded in 1817, it was named by its residents for Andrew Jackson, who won fame in the War of 1812 and was later elected president. The town grew slowly at first, and in 1840 it still had just 297 people.
Jackson had four churches by 1846, along with one newspaper office and roughly seven stores. Two railroad lines later reached the town and growth sped up, so by 1880 it held 3,021 people. Six years later it counted eight churches, two banks and two newspaper offices.
- Iron from local groundIn 1886 Jackson's largest employers were two iron makers, the Globe Iron Company and the Star Furnace Company, with 30 workers apiece. Both used coal and iron ore taken from the ground near town to make iron products.
- Apple Festival since 1937Apples were among the county's leading crops, so in the spring of 1937 the Chamber of Commerce planned a festival to honor that work, bring county residents together and call former residents home. The first one ran October 6 to 9, with prizes for apples, vegetables, grains and flowers, a baby and pet parade, and a crowned queen and court. The Jaycees joined as co-sponsors in 1959, and crowds kept coming after commercial apple growing declined.
- The county's largest townJackson kept growing through the 20th century. By 2000 it was the biggest community in Jackson County, with 6,184 people, roughly one of every five county residents.
