About Gapland, Maryland
Gapland is a community of 109 people in Washington County, Maryland, as counted in the 2020 census, and it covers just 0.224 square miles. In 1885 George Alfred Townsend, a well-known army correspondent, bought land in Crampton's Gap along with a mile of ground to the south. He began building a summer retreat there and called it Gapland, because several gaps could be seen from the place and the name suited the lay of his land.
- Growing with the railroadGapland grew and held steady while the Washington County Railroad was at its height. The B&O line carried people, work and goods into the area, and the farming families around the station came to think of their community as a town.
- B&O jobs by 1900The railroad station gave work to many people who lived in Gapland. The census of 1900 already lists residents here as trackmen, inspectors and engineers on the B&O Railroad.
