About Yarrowsburg, Maryland

Yarrowsburg is a village of 112 people in Washington County, below Elk Ridge on the western edge of Pleasant Valley. Until late in the 19th century the Antietam Iron Works owned the whole mountain, and its forest was cut and burned into charcoal to fuel the furnace and forges.

The iron works went bankrupt in the 1850s, and the cut-over mountain land was then sold off in lots of several acres. That is why many homes in Yarrowsburg stand on old iron works ground. Today the village is a rural place of single-family homes along Reed, Kaetzel and Yarrowsburg roads.

“Although Georgetown became Yarrow’s home, his son, Aquilla, and daughter-in-law, Polly, bought land in the Pleasant Valley farming area of Washington County, Maryland, and settled there.”
Robert E. Hall, 2017
  • Named for Aquila and Polly YarrowIn 1825 Aquila and Polly Yarrow, free African Americans, bought 1 1/4 acres with a small log house on it, on the southeast corner where Yarrowsburg Road meets Reed Road. They were one of several free Black families here then, and Aquila is thought to have worked as a collier for the iron works. He died suddenly in 1832, but Polly lived on in the village that carries her name until November 21, 1885.
  • The road through Solomon's GapYarrowsburg grew at the only historic crossing over Elk Ridge, a road through steep, rocky Solomon's Gap. Otherwise travelers had to go around the mountain's north or south end by Trego or Sandy Hook roads. The gap figured in the strategy of the Civil War battles nearby. The road was abandoned in the early 20th century and no longer goes through.
