About Dargan, Maryland

Dargan is a community of 163 people in Washington County, Maryland. Its place in history comes from the Kennedy Farm, also called Samples Manor. In 1859 John Brown and his men spent months at the farm. They gathered guns and ammunition there.

In the farmhouse, Brown's band made its plan to attack the arsenal at Harpers Ferry. They set out from the farm and made the raid on October 17, 1859. The farm has been known as Brown's base ever since.

“The Kennedy Farmhouse is the structure most closely associated with the raid, beside the enginehouse at Harpers Ferry where Brown staged his final defense.”
Maryland Historical Trust
