About Gardnerville Ranchos, Nevada

Gardnerville Ranchos is a community of 11,318 people in Douglas County, in Nevada's Carson Valley. In the mid 1960s, C.E. "Red" Swift owned a large piece of land here and planned to fill it with houses. Douglas County would approve his subdivision only if it had a public water system and paved streets.

Swift asked the nearby towns of Minden and Gardnerville to annex the land, but both said no because it sat so close to them. The county then passed Ordinance 147 on April 9, 1965, and that law created the Gardnerville Ranchos General Improvement District.

  • A board full of SwiftsOf the district's five first trustees, four were Swifts: D.A., C.E., M.K. and C.N. Swift. The fifth was W.P. Bednar. On May 17, 1967, the district annexed its original area, Unit 2, and on that same day it took in Units 3 and 4 and the Country Club Estates golf course area.
  • Built on Dressler ranch landThe Dressler family ranched in the Carson Valley for five generations and at one time held 20,000 acres. Over the years family members sold off most of it, and large pieces became the Gardnerville Ranchos housing development. By 2006 the Dresslers had kept only 150 acres.
