About Minden, Nevada
Minden is a community of 3,442 people in Douglas County, and it has served as the county seat since 1916. The H.F. Dangberg Land and Livestock Company created the town in 1905 on land of the Dangberg Home Ranch. The Virginia and Truckee Railway was building a branch line south from Carson City at the time, and the company wanted the new town to serve as its terminal.
The company's founder had been born in 1829 in Minden, a town in Westphalia, Germany, so the new town took that name. His son, H.F. Dangberg Jr., the company secretary, became the town's main promoter and commissioned most of its early buildings. Many of the first settlers were German, and Minden has had a post office since 1906.
- The 1917 sundown sirenBeginning in 1917, Minden sounded a siren at 6 p.m. almost every evening. At first it warned that members of the Washoe tribe had to leave town by 6:30 p.m. or face jail or a fine. Douglas County did not finish repealing its sundown ordinance until the mid-1970s, and even after that the siren went on sounding.
- Silenced in 2023Nevada banned such signals in 2021. Town officials argued that the law did not apply, because under a local ordinance the siren was now dedicated to first responders. Then a second state law, S.B. 391, passed in 2023, and Minden silenced the siren.
- Sailplanes over 990 milesThe Carson Valley around Minden ranks among the best places in the world for gliding. The Sierra Nevada to the west helps lee waves form, and the desert east of the Pine Nut range heats the air into strong thermals. Pilots launching sailplanes from here have flown more than 990 miles.
- A Starbucks hub in 2018Starbucks built a distribution center of 712,000 square feet in Minden in 2018 to handle its regional supply chain. The warehouse brought at least 500 jobs to the area.
