About Middlefield, Ohio
Middlefield is a village of 2,748 people in Geauga County. Isaac Thompson and his son James settled the place in 1799, and Joseph Johnson took up land to the north in 1800, at the spot still called Johnson Corners. The settlement was first known as Batavia, but it came to be called Middlefield because it sat halfway between Painesville and Warren.
By 1880 the village had 325 people and sat on the P. & Y. railroad, about 30 miles east of Cleveland. It had a newspaper called the Messenger, a Methodist Episcopal church and a Wesleyan Methodist church, a grist mill, two saw and woodworking mills, brick and tile works and cheese factories, and mineral springs dotted the countryside around it. Middlefield was incorporated as a village in 1901.
- James Thompson's innIn 1818 James Thompson, son of the first settler, built a hotel that was first called the James Thompson Inn and later the Century Inn. Now known as the Batavia House, it is the oldest building left in Middlefield and houses the Middlefield Historical Association. It joined the National Register in 1987.
- The narrow gauge of 1873In 1873 a narrow gauge railroad linked Painesville and Warren, the same two towns that gave Middlefield its name. The Historical Association tells its story at The Depot, a small railroad museum it opens each summer.
- First factory in 1895The Johnson Pail Company, founded in 1895, was Middlefield's first manufacturer. Industry kept growing, with companies such as KraftMaid, Duncan Toys and Gold Key Processing, and today industrial and commercial businesses pay more than 80% of the village's income tax, making Middlefield the industrial capital of Geauga County.
- Hitching posts at WalmartMiddlefield is the center of the fourth largest Amish settlement in the world. When Walmart opened a Supercenter in the village in 2005, it built a larger parking lot with 37 hitching posts for buggies and stocked blocks of ice and fabric for Amish families who sew their own clothes.
