About Chardon, Ohio
Chardon is a city of 5,242 people and the seat of Geauga County, about 10 miles south of Lake Erie. It takes its name from Peter Chardon Brooks, who gave the land for Chardon Square. The city dates its founding to 1812, the year Chardon Township was established, and it was incorporated as a village in 1851.
The 2000 census found more than 5,000 residents, so in 2001 Chardon became a city. No other community in Geauga County is incorporated as a city, and Chardon's limits take in land that once belonged to Chardon, Hambden and Munson townships.
- The fire of 1868On July 24 and 25, 1868, a fire that started in Parlin Parkin's grocery store swept through the center of town, burning the courthouse, the post office and many stores on the square. The damage came to about $120,000. Chardon rebuilt quickly: its new county courthouse, finished in 1869, still stands, and many buildings raised after the fire are still in use. The Chardon Courthouse Square District joined the National Register in 1974.
- Ohio's snowiest cityChardon sits on a 730-foot ridge about 10 miles inland from Lake Erie. Winter winds crossing the lake are forced up the ridge and drop their moisture here, an average of 107 inches of snow a year. From November 9 through November 13, 1996, a lake-effect storm buried the city under more than 70 inches. Governor George Voinovich declared a state of emergency, and the Ohio National Guard came in to help dig out.
- Maple Festival on the squareChardon is known for its maple syrup. The season opens with Tapping Sunday in March, when thawing weather starts the sap running, and the four-day Geauga County Maple Festival is held on Chardon Square over the last weekend of April. Because the town lies in the Great Lakes snow belt, April snowstorms have forced the festival to change its dates many times.
- An Art Deco theater from 1939The Geauga Theater opened in 1939 as an Art Deco movie house. After a renovation it became home to the Geauga Lyric Theater Guild, and it now shows first-run movies again.
