About Gilman, Montana
Gilman is a community of 48 people in Lewis and Clark County, Montana, beside Elk Creek, which feeds the Sun River. In 1912 Great Northern Railway officials planned a new branch through the Sun River Valley so they could serve its rich farmland, and Gilman was founded as a railroad town on that line.
Augusta, less than 2 miles to the southwest, wanted the railroad too, and the two towns competed hard for it. Gilman won and became the western end of the branch. Many Augusta businesses then packed up and moved to the new town, and a bank was among them.
- Named for L. C. GilmanTo lay out the new town, the railway chartered the Gilman Townsite Company. The company and the town both took their name from L. C. Gilman, one of the company's officers.
- The bank fails in 1923The Gilman State Bank failed in 1923, and after that the town began to decline. The old bank building still stands as one of the few structures left from Gilman's railroad days.
- Augusta takes back its leadIn the late 1920s the railroad pushed its line on to Augusta. Once the tracks reached the older town, Augusta won back the prominence it had lost to Gilman.
