About Milford Colony, Montana

Milford Colony is a Hutterite community in Lewis and Clark County, in the valley of Flat Creek, a stream that flows east into the Dearborn River. The colony was founded in 1947 as a branch of the Milford Hutterite Colony in Alberta, and it took the Alberta colony's name south with it to Montana.

The settlement lies along U.S. Route 287, 15 miles southeast of Augusta, in the northeast part of the county. Its address has long been given as Wolf Creek, and its children are served by the Auchard Creek Elementary and Augusta High school districts.

  • Founded in 1947Milford Colony began as a division of the Milford Hutterite Colony in Alberta, Canada. Most records give 1947 as the year the new Montana colony was founded, though Hofer's account dates it to 1946.
  • A Lehrerleut colonyBy 2012 Milford Colony belonged to the Lehrerleut branch of the Hutterites. That year John Kleinsasser served as its minister, and Eli Hofer ran the colony as its manager.
  • Counted in 2020The Census Bureau first listed Milford Colony as a census-designated place before the 2020 census, which counted 2 people living here.
