About Girard, Ohio
Girard is a city of 9,603 people in southern Trumbull County, on the Mahoning River just north of Youngstown. Settlers first came here in 1800, but the place hardly grew for years afterward, and it began to change only after the Ohio and Erie Canal was completed.
- Named for Stephen GirardMost likely, the city's name honors Stephen Girard, a Philadelphia philanthropist who was born in France. He started the Girard Bank in that city and also founded Girard College there.
- The Barnhisel HouseThe home of Henry Barnhisel II stands inside the city and joined the National Register in 1982. An Ohio historical marker, numbered 19-78, also tells its story under the title The Barnhisel House.
