About Glen Head, New York
Glen Head is a hamlet of 4,837 people on Long Island's North Shore, within the Town of Oyster Bay and Nassau County. In 1717 Richard Townsend 2nd bought a farm at Cedar Swamp, and the Glen Head railroad depot was later built on that ground. Timothy Townsend inherited the land from his father, and Timothy's son Hewlett made his home there in turn.
- A Glen Head schoolmasterBorn at Glen Head in 1835, Benjamin W. Downing began his working life as a teacher. In 1856 voters made him superintendent of schools for the town of Oyster Bay. He was later appointed school commissioner over every school in Queens County, and the schools he oversaw grew much stronger under his watch.
- On the Oyster Bay BranchThe Long Island Rail Road's Glen Head station, on the Oyster Bay Branch, stands in the hamlet's downtown, close to the Gold Coast Public Library. Manhattan lies less than 30 miles to the west, and many people who live here ride to New York for work.
- Home of Strat-O-MaticThe Strat-O-Matic game company keeps its headquarters in Glen Head. The North Shore Central School District has just one high school, North Shore High School, and it stands here too.
