About Glenwood Landing, New York
Glenwood Landing is a hamlet of 3,948 people in Nassau County, on the shore of Hempstead Harbor. Most of it lies in the Town of Oyster Bay, while a small southwest corner belongs to the Town of North Hempstead. Settlers arrived in 1681, and the families who followed made their living from the land and the water. They farmed, ran mills and dug sand, they fished and gathered oysters, they built boats, and in later years they supplied and produced energy.
- Resort days on the harborFrom the late 1800s into the early 1900s, Glenwood Landing drew summer visitors, celebrities among them. They stayed at Karatsonyi's Hotel and at other places like it around Hempstead Harbor.
- An oyster sloop from 1883The Christeen was built in Glenwood Landing in 1883 as an oyster sloop. By 1914 she belonged to Captain William Bond of Southold, and a photograph from that year shows her docked in Greenport. In 1991 the Christeen was designated a National Historic Landmark.
