About Port Washington, New York

In the 1870s Port Washington became a sand-mining town. It held the biggest sandbank east of the Mississippi, with barges ready for Manhattan. About 140 million cubic yards of its sand became concrete for the Empire State and Chrysler buildings and the subway. In 1998 the old pits became the Harbor Links golf course.

Port Washington is named for George Washington. In the late 1930s it was the New York base for Pan Am's Yankee Clipper flying boats. The calm waters of Manhasset Bay suited them. They flew to London, the Azores and Bermuda.

  • A famous residentThe composer John Philip Sousa lived in Port Washington for many years. In June 1967 the town dedicated a bandshell in Sunset Park as his memorial. It became one of its main stages for the performing arts.
