About Plandome, New York

The Matinecock people first lived on the land that is now Plandome. They named the area Sint Sink, or place of small stones. The village name comes from the Latin words Planus Domus. That phrase means a plain or level home.

Early in the 1900s, four young friends from New York City bought about 90 acres of Mitchill family land. They formed the Plandome Land Company and built single-family homes around the Plandome Village Green. The village was incorporated in 1911.

  • The station fire and rebuildingIn January 1987, vandals set fire to the Plandome train station, which also held the post office. The building burned down. It was rebuilt by 1990 with a longer platform and a new post office space.
