About Thomaston, New York

Thomaston is a village of 2,759 people in the Town of North Hempstead, at the southeastern corner of Long Island's Great Neck Peninsula. Its name started out near the Long Island Rail Road's Great Neck station. William R. Grace, who later became mayor of New York City, bought a large tract of land there and called it Thomaston after his wife Lillian Gilchrist's home in Maine.

In 1930 the station area incorporated under the name Great Neck Plaza, which left the old name free. The next year, residents of the neighboring area voted on forming a village so they could keep home rule. On September 17, 1931, 80 voted yes and 33 voted no. Because members of the Grace family still owned land nearby, they chose the name Thomaston, and the village became official on October 1, 1931.

  • Groucho in Great Neck VillaIn June 1926 Julius Henry Marx, known to the world as Groucho, moved into a house on Lincoln Road in Great Neck Villa, a colony the Shields Brothers had developed on the hills southeast of the station. He was appearing in The Cocoanuts at the time. He lived there until 1931, the year Thomaston incorporated, and he signed the new village's register of residents before he moved to Hollywood.
  • A smaller village than plannedThe first plan for the village also took in University Gardens and Russell Gardens. University Gardens decided to stay out, and Russell Gardens formed its own village that same year, so Thomaston went ahead without them. Henry A. Singley, Ernest A. Gallagher, Hunter L. DeLatour and John W. Weight were its founders.
  • Village Hall in 1971For four decades the village had no building of its own. Its board usually met in the nearby firehouse, and the village clerks kept the records at home. In 1971 Thomaston built its Village Hall to give its government a permanent home. Blum & Nerzig, an architectural firm based in Great Neck, designed it.
