About Manhasset, New York
Early settlers called the peninsula Cow Neck because it offered good grazing. By 1659 more than 300 cows grazed there behind a fence five miles long. Each settler could graze a cow there for every section of fence he built. The fence came down in 1677, and Manhasset became known as Little Cow Neck.
The community took the name Manhasset in 1840. The name comes from the Native word Manhanset. It roughly means the island neighborhood. Around that time, the people living there became known as Manhasseniters.
- A landmark houseManhasset is one of the oldest communities on the north shore. Its Onderdonk House was built in 1836. It was considered the finest Greek Revival building on Long Island, with a two-story portico of four Doric columns.
