About Glens Falls, New York

Glens Falls is a city of 14,830 people in the southeastern corner of Warren County, where a big waterfall drops through the Hudson River. The area's Indigenous people called this ground Chepontuc, meaning "difficult place to get around," and it was also known as the Great Carrying Place. Quakers led by Abraham Wing made the first lasting settlement, and in 1766 the hamlet was renamed Wing's Falls for him and the falls. Fire destroyed most of it twice during the Revolution, so the Quakers left and did not return until the war ended in 1783.

In 1788 Wing's claim to the name passed to Colonel Johannes Glen of Schenectady. Local legends give three reasons: to pay a debt, to settle a card game, or as thanks for a party Glen hosted for their friends. Glen renamed the place Glen's Falls, and after years of mixed spellings, Glens Falls became the usual form. A post office opened in 1808, the village incorporated in 1839, and in 1908 the state legislature made it a city, separate from Queensbury.

  • A British blockhouseDuring the French and Indian War, the British built Fort Amherst here as a blockhouse at the midpoint of the military road from Fort Edward to Fort William Henry, which stood at the head of Lake George. The forts were meant to protect the colony's northern lands from French attacks. Fort Amherst Road now marks where it stood.
  • The Feeder Canal, around 1820Around 1820 the state dug the Glens Falls Feeder Canal to supply water to the Champlain Canal. Boats hauled lime, marble, lumber and farm goods from the Canal Street docks, at a time when New York's canal system drove the state's economy.
  • Twelve doctors in 1897Twelve local physicians founded Glens Falls Hospital in the summer of 1897 to serve the whole Upper Hudson River Valley, and Solomon A. Parks gave his house for the first hospital. Rebuilt and enlarged several times, it now has 410 beds, serves as the region's trauma center and is the area's biggest employer.
  • 644 soldiers rememberedA limestone obelisk dedicated in 1872 honors 644 Queensbury men who fought for the Union in the Civil War. The names of the ninety-five who died are carved into its stone.
  • Hometown U.S.A. since 1944The village came through fires in 1864, 1884 and 1902 and became a city in 1908. In 1944 Look magazine called Glens Falls "Hometown U.S.A.," a nickname the city still carries, and it has also called itself the Empire City.
