About Goldfield, Nevada

Goldfield was named for the gold found near its first town site. Prospectors struck gold here in 1902, the year the town began. The mines boomed, and by 1906 about 20,000 people lived here. For a short time it was the biggest city in Nevada.

Wyatt and Virgil Earp arrived in Goldfield in 1904. Virgil became a deputy sheriff in January 1905. He caught pneumonia that April and died on October 19, 1905. Wyatt left town soon after.

  • The man behind the Goldfield HotelGeorge Wingfield settled in Goldfield in 1906 and built the Goldfield Hotel. He and his partner George S. Nixon formed the Goldfield Consolidated Mining Company. By 1906 the two men were worth 30 million dollars.
