About Good Hope, Alabama

Good Hope is a city of 2,483 people in Cullman County, in north-central Alabama, and it borders the county seat of Cullman to the northeast. Settlers began arriving in the 1840s, and the community took its name from the Good Hope Baptist Church, which was founded in 1842.

In the late 1870s German immigrants came to the Good Hope area, as they did to much of Cullman County. By 1899 the community was large enough to host a big convention of Confederate veterans, and 53 of the old soldiers came to it.

  • A German schoolhouse in 1880The German newcomers built Good Hope's first schoolhouse in 1880. That school was later folded into the Good Hope School, and the community put up a four-room school building in 1926.
  • A city since April 1962Good Hope went without a town government until April 1962, when it incorporated. At first the town covered 640 acres. In less than ten years its limits had grown to 2,890 acres, and it now runs on a mayor and council.
  • Home of the RaidersGood Hope High School, part of the Cullman County Schools, teaches 395 students in grades 9 through 12. Its teams are the Raiders, wearing red and white, and they play in Class 4A of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. The city also has a primary, an elementary and a middle school of its own.
