About Gorham, New York

Gorham is a town of 4,130 people in Ontario County, southeast of Canandaigua. It sits on the county's southern edge along the Yates County line, with Canandaigua Lake, one of the Finger Lakes, forming its western boundary. Its first buildings went up in November 1796, after Ontario County issued a charter for a place it called East Town.

Settlers organized that land as the town of Easton on April 7, 1797. They renamed it Lincoln in 1806, then changed it again in 1807 to Gorham, honoring Nathaniel Gorham, one of the area's early proprietors. In 1822 part of the town was split off to create the Town of Hopewell.

  • The lakeshore joins in 1824Two years after losing land to Hopewell, Gorham gained territory in 1824, including the east shore of Canandaigua Lake. The lakeside hamlets of Greens Landing, Crystal Beach and Cottage City later grew up along that shore.
  • Bethel becomes GorhamThe town's main hamlet, near the east town line, was first called Bethel. In 1856 it took the name Gorham to match the town around it, with Flint Creek flowing north past it. Twelve years later, in 1868, a fire burned much of Gorham village.
