About Hopewell, New York

Hopewell is a town of 3,931 people in north central Ontario County, east of the City of Canandaigua and close to the northeastern end of Canandaigua Lake. Long before settlers came, the Seneca village of Onnaghee stood here, but its people left it before 1750 and probably went on to found the newer village at Canandaigua.

In 1788 the land was sold as part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase, and settlers, most of them from Massachusetts, began arriving in 1789. The area was first called the District of Easton, then Lincoln, and in 1807 it took the name Gorham to honor Nathaniel Gorham. On March 29, 1822, the north end of Gorham split off as the Town of Hopewell. At its first town meeting, on April 17, 1823, voters chose Nathan Lewis as supervisor.

  • Oliver Phelps's mill, 1791Oliver Phelps built a grist mill in 1791 at what is now Littleville, on the northern town line. The hamlet is named for Norman C. Little, who ran the Phelps mill and kept a store there.
  • A county home since 1825In 1825 the Ontario County Board of Supervisors bought farmland in the southeast part of Hopewell and opened a home there for the county's poor. The county still owns that land, which now holds the County Health Facility, the County Historian and Archives Center and other county buildings.
  • A utopian colony in 1844Members of Rochester's Fourier Society founded the Ontario Union in Hopewell in 1844, a community built on the ideas of the French socialist Charles Fourier. It sat at Bates' Mills, about five miles from Canandaigua, and a Fourierist newspaper counted chairmakers, carpenters, millwrights, blacksmiths and machinists among the people living there.
  • Chapinville and the railroadThe hamlet of Chapin, once called Chapinville, grew up in the northwest corner of the town where Routes 21 and 488 now meet. A railroad was built through it, but the extra business and trade it brought did not last long.
