About Gothenburg, Nebraska

Gothenburg is a city of 3,478 people in Dawson County, Nebraska. Olof BergstrΓΆm came to America from Sweden in 1881 and worked on the Union Pacific Railroad before he took up a homestead in Dawson County. He went on to sell land for the railroad, and in 1882 he chose the site for a new town and placed his own farmstead about a mile to the north.

The Union Pacific laid out the first town as eight blocks running alongside its tracks. E. G. West named it after Gothenburg, Sweden, and the surrounding precinct took the same name. BergstrΓΆm sailed back to Sweden several times to bring groups of settlers to Dawson County, so many families here have Swedish roots, and the two Gothenburgs are believed to be the only cities by that name anywhere.

  • A Pony Express stationThe Pony Express Trail passes through Gothenburg. One of its stations first stood on the Upper 96 Ranch, a spot four miles to the east of Fort McPherson in Lincoln County. In 1931 the station was given to the city, and it was moved to Ehmen Park in the center of town.
  • Swedish Crosses CemeteryTwo miles north and two miles west of town, crosses of wrought iron stand over the graves of three children born to Swedish immigrant families. A Nebraska Historical Marker was dedicated at the cemetery in August 1991.
  • Two museums of local lifeThe Gothenburg Historical Museum was organized in 1980 to keep artifacts from around Dawson County. The Sod House Museum followed in 1988, beside a full-size copy of a real sod house with a barn, windmills and life-size sculptures made of barbed wire.
