About Willow Island, Nebraska

Willow Island is a community of 25 people in western Dawson County, on U.S. Route 30 between Cozad and Gothenburg. Lexington, the county seat, lies 19 miles to the southeast. The town itself was laid out in the 1880s, after settlers had already begun farming the land around it.

“In March, of the same year, settlement was made at Willow Island by Josiah Huffman, and during the season a number of farms were opened up in this vicinity.”
History of the State of Nebraska, 1882
  • A Pony Express stop in 1861In 1861 the Pony Express opened Willow Island Station at a ranch that was already running south of the Platte River, roughly 6 miles southeast of Cozad. Its riders came through 14 years after the vanguard company of Latter-day Saints had traveled this route.
  • Named for an island of willowsThe town took its name from a nearby island where willows grew thick. For years people used two names, Willow and Willow Island, so in 1902 the Board on Geographic Names ruled that Willow Island was the official one.
  • A post office from 1874Willow Island got its own post office in 1874, years before the town was laid out. It stayed open until 1991, when it was discontinued.
