About Graceville Colony, South Dakota
Graceville Colony, spelled Gracevale in its records, is a Hutterite colony in Lake County. It began in 1948 near the town of Winfred as a daughter colony of the older Tschetter colony. The Census Bureau first named it a census-designated place shortly before the 2020 count, which found 21 people living here.
- A daughter of TschetterGracevale was started near Winfred in 1948, branching off from the Tschetter colony. A 1965 South Dakota State University bulletin on the Hutterite Brethren records the founding next to that of Maxwell, which New Elm Springs had set up near Scotland one year earlier.
- Beside the Vermillion's East ForkThe colony lies in the southwest part of Lake County, on the east bank of the East Fork of the Vermillion River, which flows south to join the Missouri. It sits 8 miles southeast of Winfred and 14 miles southwest of Madison, the county seat, and its children attend the Madison Central School District.
