About Grangerland, Texas

Grangerland is a community of 754 people in eastern Montgomery County, about 10 miles southeast of Conroe and 30 miles north of Houston. Dr. Edwin Granger bought land here in 1907 because he meant to start a community, and the town that grew up on it still carries his family's name.

“The town became known as Grangerland, and though the boom settled down the oil industry as well as a timber industry continued to support the community.”
Handbook of Texas
  • Cotton and railroad tiesDr. Granger and the settlers who came with him earned their living from the land. They grew cotton, sold small amounts of lumber and cut ties for the railroads.
  • Granger's Camp, 1932Oil was discovered in the area in 1931, during the Texas oil boom, and workers arrived faster than there were places for them to live. The next year Don D. Granger, Dr. Granger's son, began building thirty-two houses for them, and the cluster was named Granger's Camp.
  • Grangerland by the 1950sThe camp kept growing through the 1940s and 1950s, and the land around it took on the name Grangerland. Today Caney Creek Fire and Rescue runs a station in the community, and its older students attend Caney Creek High School in the Conroe Independent School District.
