About Grawn, Michigan
Grawn was founded in the 1870s and first called Blackwood. That name honored James B. Blackwood, its first settler. In 1890 a railway was built through the village, and it was renamed Grawn Station. The new name honored Charles T. Grawn, who had led Central Michigan Normal School. Within that year it became simply Grawn.
A blaze started at Carl's Tire Retreading Company in December 1995. It burned for 20 days, and residents and Blair Elementary School had to evacuate. In 2003, PFAS from the chemicals used against the flames turned up at the site and in local wells.
