About Interlochen, Michigan
Interlochen was the headquarters of the National High School Orchestra and Band Camp, a nonprofit summer school of music. The camp covered 400 acres with more than 100 buildings between two lakes. About 300 students came from every state. Its Sunday concerts were broadcast over NBC.
The name Interlochen joins the Latin inter, for between, with the Scottish Gaelic lochan, meaning lakes. Odawa people once lived between the two lakes, which they called Wahbekaness and Wahbekanetta. Today they are known as Duck and Green lakes.
