About Greene, New York

Greene is a town of 5,296 people in Chenango County, in the county's southwestern corner along the Broome County line. Part of its land was bought from the Oneida and Tuscarora people in 1785, though many Oneida stayed in the area until about 1812. The first outside settler came in 1792 and made his home where Greene village stands today.

The town was first called Hornby, then renamed to honor General Nathanael Greene, one of the American Revolution's heroes. It was formed in 1798 from parts of Bainbridge and Union and gained more land from Bainbridge in 1799. Later it gave up ground to the new towns of Coventry in 1806 and Smithville in 1808, and to Barker in 1840. The village of Greene was incorporated inside the town in 1842.

  • Trade on the ChenangoThe Chenango River, which feeds the Susquehanna, runs south through Greene. The Chenango Canal of 1837 helped the town's businesses grow. The railroad later took over the canal's traffic, and in time Route 12 and State Highway 206 took over from the railroad. The two highways meet in Greene village.
  • Greene Airport since 1945Robert Barrows bought the Gross Flat flying field in 1945 and opened it as the Greene Airport. It still operates on Airport Road, and its grass runway ranks among the longest and widest in the area. Student pilots train there with a local instructor, and its weather station sends live readings to the National Weather Service.
  • A professional stage in 2006A local committee founded the Chenango River Theatre in Greene in 2006 to bring visitors to the town and to Chenango County. The committee became a board, which chose Bill Lelbach as the first artistic and managing director. He led the company through its 15th season in 2021, and Zach Curtis took over in 2022. It remains one of the few Equity theatres in the country to last in a fully rural setting.
