About Grissom AFB, Indiana

Grissom AFB is a community of 3,009 people in Miami County that grew up around an air base. In March 1942 the Navy approved a reserve aviation base on level farmland south of Peru. The station was commissioned on July 1, 1942, though construction went on until April 12, 1943, and the final bill came to $13,064,424.43.

During the Second World War the station, called Bunker Hill, trained thousands of pilots for the Navy, the Marines and the Coast Guard. The Air Force later ran it as Bunker Hill Air Force Base from 1954. On May 12, 1968, it was renamed for astronaut Gus Grissom, who was born in Mitchell, Indiana. After a base closing decision in 1991, it was cut back to an Air Force Reserve base in 1994 and became Grissom Air Reserve Base.

  • A newspaperman's pitchJoe Nixon, a newspaper executive, served as president of the Peru Chamber of Commerce. During those years he persuaded the Navy to put its new air station near Peru, and that station grew into the base the community is named for.
  • Named for Gus GrissomVirgil I. "Gus" Grissom had been picked as one of the first seven Mercury astronauts. On January 27, 1967, he, Ed White and Roger Chaffee died when fire broke out inside their Apollo 1 spacecraft while it sat on the pad. The base took his name the following year.
  • Built for 1,200 cadetsThe plans called for 2,158 acres, four runways, 77 buildings and housing for 3,200 officers and men, with 25 auxiliary fields within 20 miles. Planners picked the site because the land was level for miles, it lay outside airline routes and the Pennsylvania Railroad had a station 1.5 miles away. The Russell B. Moore Company drew up the base while working out of an old schoolhouse at Bunker Hill.
  • A Flying Fortress's last flightB-17G Flying Fortress No. 44-83690 was among the last B-17s the military still flew when it was dropped from the Air Force inventory in August 1960. In 1961 it made its final flight to the base, then still called Bunker Hill, to go on permanent display. The plane is now on the National Register.
