About Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan

Grosse Pointe Park is a city of 11,595 people in Wayne County, on the shore of Lake St. Clair about 7 miles east of downtown Detroit. Its land was first part of the Village of Fairview, in Grosse Pointe Township, which stretched from Bewick Street on the west to Cadieux Road on the east. In 1907 the city of Detroit annexed the western part of Fairview, from Bewick Street to Alter Road.

The residents east of Alter Road worried that Detroit would take their land next, so later in 1907 they incorporated as the Village of Grosse Pointe Park. In 1950 the village became a city, which shielded it further from Detroit and freed it from the township. In November 2021 voters chose Michele Hodges as the city's first woman mayor.

  • Named for George DeferDefer Elementary School was the first school built after the consolidation. It honors George Defer, who lived from 1880 to 1927 and served the village as a trustee and as its president before going on to the state senate.
  • Windmill PointeThe tip of Windmill Pointe marks the spot where Lake St. Clair ends and the Detroit River begins. The city keeps a large lakefront park there for residents, with a pool, a gym, movie theaters and gathering rooms. At the base of the point, where Three Mile Drive meets the water, Patterson Park draws people to its skating rink and its walking trails.
  • The cabbage patchLocals call the city's northwest corner the cabbage patch. Bounded by Mack, Wayburn, Jefferson and Somerset, it is filled with multi-family houses, unlike the big single-family lots found across most of the Grosse Pointes. The nickname lives on in the Cabbage Patch Cafe and the Cabbage Patch Saloon.
  • A new library in 2005The Grosse Pointe Public Library planned to open its Carolyn and Ted Ewald Memorial Branch in Grosse Pointe Park in October 2004. Delays pushed the opening of the 15,000 square foot branch back to January 2005.
