About Grove City, Ohio
Grove City is a city of 41,252 people in Franklin County, just outside Columbus. Its first European settler, Hugh Grant, ran a gristmill in Pittsburgh and shipped his extra goods down the Ohio River to sell, then walked all the way home. One of those trips took him through the Scioto Valley, and in 1803 he bought land there and came back with his wife, Catharine, to farm it.
Decades later William F. Breck bought 15.25 acres from Hugh Grant Jr. and then 300 more acres, planning to farm. Because the Harrisburg Turnpike ran through the land to Columbus, he changed his mind and planned a village with a school, a church, stores and shops. With George Weygandt, William Sibray and Jeremiah Smith, he laid it out east of Broadway in 1852. By December 1853 it had 50 residents, and it was named for the groves of trees left after the first clearing.
- Beulah Park in 1889In 1889 A. G. Grant brought the village a plan for new houses on farmland west of Harrisburg Pike that had once been Breck's. He named the development the Beulah Addition for his daughter, Beulah, and added a wooded park to attract buyers. Crowds came for picnics, concerts, speeches and baseball, and a small racetrack soon followed, the start of Beulah Park Race Track. Today a marker marks the spot, at the roundabout joining Columbus Street and Southwest Boulevard.
- The Grant HomesteadThe Grant family, whose Hugh and Catharine Grant were the first settlers of Jackson Township, kept a homestead on Haughn Road through six generations. The house still stands, and it joined the National Register in 1998 as the A. G. Grant Homestead.
- A village in 1866Grove City was incorporated as a village on March 5, 1866. It grew fast enough to be reincorporated as a city in 1959, under a charter written in 1958 and amended in 1982. That charter divides power three ways: voters choose the mayor and the city council, and an administrator is appointed.
- Arts in the AlleyEach year the Grove City Chamber of Commerce puts on the Arts in the Alley Festival and Parade, a three-day event that reached its 45th year in 2024. The city also holds a Wine & Arts Festival, a Bourbon & Spirits Festival and a Christmas Tree Lighting and Parade.
