About Groveport, Ohio

Groveport is a city of 6,009 people in Franklin County, a suburb of Columbus. Pioneers were settling the area by about 1800, and in 1831 the Ohio and Erie Canal reached the spot, drawing shops to its banks. Two rival towns grew up beside the water, Rarey's Port and Wert's Grove. They merged in 1846, and the combined town was incorporated as the village of Groveport in 1847, the same year its post office opened.

Canal boats were built and repaired at a boatyard on the ground that is now Blacklick Park, and the canal cut across Main Street a little east of Front Street. The railroad arrived in 1868 and took over the trade, and by 1900 the canal boats had quit running for good.

  • Cruiser, the wild stallionJohn S. Rarey, born in Groveport, won fame around the world as a horse tamer who relied on kindness, patience and firmness. His hardest case was Cruiser, a dark bay stallion belonging to an English earl. Rarey calmed him in three hours, and the astonished earl gave him the horse as a reward.
  • Why athletes are the CruisersCruiser lived out his days in Groveport, and Rarey provided for him in his will, but with his trainer gone the stallion turned wild again. Cruiser Park and Cruiser Avenue carry his name, and Groveport Madison athletes are the Cruisers.
  • A log house from 1815The Groveport Log House went up in 1815, when the canal was still years away. In 1974 it was moved to a new site near Groveport Cemetery, and the Groveport Log Houses joined the National Register in 1976.
  • Warehouses by the airportRickenbacker International Airport and Air National Guard Base, next door, drew many distribution centers and warehouses to Groveport. Amazon, FedEx, Gap and American Electric Power run large operations here, and Staber Industries has its headquarters in the city.
